The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is the principal law enforcement agency in the country. The maintenance of law and order is essential for the stability, economic growth and development of any community of people. This paper aims to look in the challenges for Nigerian defence and security in the COVID-19 pandemics. The Nigerian Police Force is committed to providing support and aid in curbing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic since the index case was recorded in Nigeria on the 24th of February, 2020. However, the dysfunctional policing system of Nigeria has had a significant impact on all aspects of life in Nigeria and the COVID-19 pandemic is not different, as there are some disturbing reports of some personnel of the Nigerian Police who have been involved in corrupt practices, extra-judicial killing of citizens and the use of force on those who violated the COVID-19 directives. Therefore, the federal government should streamline and prioritize internal control mechanisms by establishing a Public Complaints Unit at each police station. The unit should include a human rights officer, an anti-corruption officer, and an officer responsible for service delivery complaints. This personnel should be assigned the exclusive duties, to receive and investigate complaints against police officers filed by members of the public. This study, therefore, attempts to examine the challenges of the policing system in Nigeria, since the emergence of the fourth republic and the COVID19 Pandemics in particular. Information for the study has been generated through secondary sources which include books, newspaper publications, journal publications, internet, among others.
